CHALLENGE
Design the latest edition of Driftwood to resemble this year’s theme for the journal: nostalgia. Driftwood is the creative arts journal for PLNU that allows students, faculty, and alumni to submit written and visual art forms to be featured in the final publication.
SOLUTION
With full creative direction over the design and page layout for the publication, it was crucial that there would be something to unite the variety of work featured so that the journal felt cohesive. To reflect the editions theme of nostalgia, the cover, typefaces, and photos were inspired by old film strip. I photographed and edited multiple of my own photos to have a nostalgic film essence that would be used on the front and back covers, as well as strategically placed in between pages to unify the journal. Lastly, it was important that each person’s work featured in the journal was properly represented as they had originally submitted it. A variety of hierarchy and spacing options were tested to finally conclude a layout that allowed for each individuals original work to shine through while also offering a pattern to flow through the final publication.
